Henry Vern Robertson

Henry Vern Robertson “Ga-Ba-Gaawk” – Ten Ravens Ten Ravens is from his mother’s family – village of Metlakatla, B.C. Born 1934 in the fishing cannery village of Butdale, B.C., raised in Kitlope and Kamano, B.C.

Henry started carving in 1947 and was taught by his father Gordon Robertson. Henry is credited for teaching many to carve including Barry Wilson, Derek Wilson, Gary Wilson, Kelvin Thompson and teaching at ten different schools in Terrace, B.C. In 1993 Henry was skipper of a 48’ canoe with 12 pullers travelling from Vancouver to Bella Bella over a period of 45 days.

 In 1872 a 30’ tall totem carved by Henry’s grandfather was collected and taken to a museum in Stockholm, Sweden. The museum agreed to return the totem if a replacement totem could be carved. Henry, with the help of Barry and Derek Wilson went to Stockholm and carved the replica totem, completing it in August, 2000. The original totem was returned to Canada. This event was made into a documentary.
